Hi

Given these cars are near as well complicated for their own good sometimes I wonder if a code reader would be worth investing in?

Some seem to be bluetooth and you tin either use a smart phone to see whats going on and what if any faults are there.

Has anyone got such a device for a E Class and if so what recomendations are they?

Quick google plant something similar this which was blue tooth.

I have a couple of these, I get out them in the cars just in case... worked fine with w230 and w221, won't practice annihilation clever, but read and reset standard codes. ( also used for Astra, Fiesta and Vectra ) First-class for the greenbacks although I have toyed with the idea of a Bluetooth one for the iphone...

Read my sticky.

What volition you do with the codes when you accept them?

Most codes are useless without live data, wiring diagrams and some knowledge on how to decipher them.

Star they are not but I have been able to utilise mine to diagnose 2 faulty EGR valves, a CPS error, coil pack fail and a throttle body fault on various cars, diagnosis which would take cost mode more than the unit price me. Used with extreme caution and a chip of common sense they are worth having in my book.

I have a few different types, the wifi and Bluetooth ones are good for getting live data on basic ODB2 info. All the same the software you lot become with them can be hitting and miss and the transfer rates tin make some of the live data meaningless.

My favourite only yous do need a laptop is ScanXL Professional merely utilise a cable ODB2 connector not wifi or Bluetooth, they do a phone tablet version called dashcommand only for some reason it does non option up some faults that are clearly there and will only erase faults information technology sees. I then plug in ScanXL Professional person and it shows the mistake which is very foreign equally its the aforementioned platform and ScanXL even contains a version of dashcommand! ScanXL volition wipe the ECU fifty-fifty if no mistake is present, dashcommand gives the message no faults present so the mistake remains

I also have an Innovate OT-ii which as well works with their other sensors and so gives awesome alive data. Information technology seems to have a faster transfer rate than other Bluetooth and wifi readers I have used.
The software that comes with it is LogWorks and is easy to use information technology volition not erase faults unless it sees them, it is permanently wired into my car although yous don't have to. It'southward OK but non perfect I will endeavour PLX next fourth dimension every bit they seem to be more than robust.

I then accept a Clarke ODB Reader no live data merely will wipe the ECU even if no codes are present - I leave this in the car it uncomplicated and effective.

Finally STAR - easy to run a quick test but takes time to learn it and its easy to get to comfortable and think information technology knows everything and end up just changing parts that work perfectly. It'south important you tin can apply a multimeter to run into if the fault is right.

So in conclusion I would say if you desire log alive data and then get a laptop based one and use a wired cable, if yous do want a tablet or phone based one take a await at PLX Kiwi.
An alternative is UltraGuage its small, lite and cheap but you tin but order from the states and while you can view and monitor alive information yous cannot save it. This is perfect for modified cars that want to watch fuel trims, timing and IAT's equally you can easily gear up alarms should whatsoever parameters yous have set exist exceeded.

If you only want a simple code reader that can gives you the codes and permit you to wipe the ECU so get a handheld one.
